What I can’t forget about the late President Cory Aquino was when a group of us from Ilocos Norte had an audience with her at her Arlegui Office in San Miguel, Manila.

That time I was assigned in our Divine Word College of Laoag and we were sent in connection with the appointment of OICs for Ilocos Norte.

The six of us were warmly received and while conversing, we were supposed to write some notes, but we had no Metal Ball Pen! Seeing our predicament, she handed the Metal Ball Pen she was holding. I don’t know now if we forgot to return it but I think we brought it home! Anyway, thanks for the souvenir, Tita Cory.

What struck me most was the President’s spontaneous way of reaching out to us at that particular instance.

It was an insignificant gesture but it somehow epitomized her simple and candid way of governing the country - highly sensitive to people’s needs.

For sure the late President left behind a lot of achievements for which she is deeply and dearly loved. To mention some: First and foremost was the restoration of democracy after 22 years of dictatorship, her courage in the face of several coup attempts, her staunch campaign against dishonesty in public service.
